Impressive Win

Nice victory over Gilroy, against some very skilled players. Absolutely worth the trip out there. Not to mention the bonus trip to In-n-out.
My favorite line from the game: "Uh, coach,... you have two number twos out there.."
Next up -  Palma. Last game of the season and final stop on the Derek Davidson Farewell tour. We'll meet up at 3:30 at the flagpole again & make sure everyone has a ride.
See you tomorrow.

Derek Davidson Tour Begins

While I was in Africa, Derek got busy and called a bunch of local coaches looking for games. This week, our final week of competition, are the two games Derek arranged. First up is Gilroy on Tuesday. Gilroy is the best team in the league and will be a challenge. On Thursday is Palma. Both games are away.
The Gilroy game on Tuesday begins at 5:00 p.m. If we leave shortly after school is out we should get there in plenty of time.
The Palma game also begins at 5:00.

Final Home Game

It's official - Monterey will come here on Friday (May 1) to play us at our gym. We've struggled getting home games this season, so I'm grateful to the Monterey team for coming over. They'd like to begin the game as early as possible; I'm shooting for 4:00 pm. Invite your friends, families, etc as it will be a nice opportunity to catch the Carmel Volleyball team in action.

Triple threat

Huge wins on Saturday! The format was changed at the last minute so that no winner was produced; but I'm pretty sure we would have won it. By the final match, we were a well-oiled machine, imposing our will on any and all opponents. Very good job!
Send me any pics you might have and I'll post them. See you at practice on Tuesday.

Tourney today

We'll be at Watsonville high school today. Games are at 10 and 11 with playoffs beginning at noon. Three rounds of playoffs & the tourney should be done by 3. Hopefully, we'll be in the last game.
Other teams are: Pacific Collegiate, Watsonville, Palma, San Benito, and Kings Academy.
See you there.

Ouch

Last night's debacle has forced Derek to call today's practice "mandatory." Glad to know they switched from being voluntary.  But it's a good thing; we've still got a bunch of games in front of us, beginning tomorrow. In fact, we'll see the same team at tomorrow's tourney.
So today's practice will be thorough and tomorrow's outcome will be the opposite of last night's. Let's get ready.

Away game vs Pacific Collegiate

They came all the way here to play us a month ago so now it's our turn to go to their house. We'll leave immediately after school. It's in Santa Cruz; here's a map. The game should start at 5; I'm guessing we'll go best 3 out of 5.
See you tomorrow. Any questions give Mike a call.

Stanford advances to post-season

Thanks to the guys who helped out on the floor this past Saturday. It was a great experience. Sorry I couldn't be there, but I watched the game on broadband & got to see you guys passing the balls on the sidelines during timeouts (all games are broadcast over the web). Also, if you haven't seen this yet, it's sick. Stanford clearly has the best libero in the nation.

A day in Los Gatos

Great tournament and great effort by everyone involved. We were finally tested and did a really good job getting out of our pool and advancing to the gold bracket. There were some very good teams there, and some very skilled players. No question that if we had a better coach we'd have won the whole thing.
This week is notable for two things: a game on Thursday in Santa Cruz, and a tournament on Saturday in Watsonville.  One problem this week is that I have to work and cannot practice any of the afternoons(except friday). We will practice on Tuesday and Friday this week. Dan will run practice on Tuesday and I'll be there Friday.
Again-- great job in Los Gatos.

Friday, April 17, 2009

Nice practice yesterday, although a little rusty, we looked pretty good. I think we're ready for tomorrow.
We're leaving at 6:30 am from the CHS parking lot. Drivers are me, Chris Bueno Sr and Deb Greist; so there's room for everyone. Mrs. Greist is organizing snacks and drinks for while we are there. Go ahead and bring stuff to share. Bring one of those camping chairs if you have one. We'll do some sitting around between matches.
Derek located the jerseys sometime today and promises that he'll have them tomorrow.
See you tomorrow.

Locked out of gym

I didn't find out until today, but we can't use the gym this week. Hopefully, we'll get to use the middle school gym on Thursday(still waiting to hear). We really need to practice before the tournament.
Speaking of which, I heard from the organizer today and we are officially in. We were a last -minute entry. It's going to be really good. I'm guessing that the tourney will start early - probably around 8 am, and go until late in the afternoon. I'll let you know as soon as I get more information. We're also planning to go up to Stanford that evening. We'll work out the logistics on Thursday - find out if you or a parent can drive. The word is that our seniors (fashion-conscious Derek & Jacob) may join us for the morning games. Los Gatos is about an hour away.
Also-- someone needs to find out if we have our jerseys yet. They are a must  for Saturday.

gym not available tues the 14th

Just heard from derek that the gym is unavailable tomorrow. I'll look into using the middle school gym. Look for a text message to confirm our whereabouts tomorrow.
Don't forget about the all day tournament this saturday.

Tournament in Los Gatos

Since we were canceled for the 11th (today), I've entered us into a tournament in Los Gatos for Saturday the 18th(a week from today). The teams we'll face (all JV) will be: Los Gatos, Harker, Mitty, Willow Glen, Westmont, St Francis, Valley Christian, and others. Looks like Monterey will be there also.
Don't forget, the 18th is the day we told the Stanford coach we'd help with the men's game against UCLA. The Stanford game begins at 7:00 pm, so we'll just drive up from Los Gatos after the tournament.
Los Gatos is about an hour away so we'll need to leave early on Saturday morning. We'll talk about it at practice.
Let's practice tuesday and thursday this week. That should have us ready for saturday.
See you Tuesday.

Bad news -- the first Watsonville tournament (originally set for this saturday) has been canceled. The other tournament is still a go. So nothing until next monday. Enjoy the break.

Season Resumed

Good news, the season is back on. Check the schedule-- we've added a game vs. Palma.
We won't be getting together next week as too many of us are out of town. But we are playing in an all day tournament at the end of the break - before you get back to school. So pay attention. The blog will let you know where to go. The tournament is in Watsonville, and we will play at least 5 matches.

Rest of Season Canceled

Sorry, but the Boys' volleyball season as been put on indefinite hold until some solution can be found to resolve the current worldwide shortage of hair gel. In these uncertain economic times, it doesn't seem just or fair to consume disproportionate amounts of hair gel playing volleyball when people around the world who have real need for hair gel, like tv anchormen in poor countries, are unable to purchase, at any price, the much needed hair product.
Look to this blog for updates, but it looks like for now the season is over. Too bad, we were just showing progress.

Great practice today, although we were missing some key people. Tomorrow's our first home game. Try to be at the gym by 4:15 to get everything set up. Let's do a good job of hosting the Pacific Collegiate Prep team.

Live from Kinshasa

Practice today after school. Try to be there. We're shut out of the gym some this week so you shouldn't miss today's practice. Derek is in charge.
Good job against the girls last week. I understand it was a very impressive win.

Update: GAME ON! We'll play at 6:30, Seaside high School. The varsity plays first at 5, so you may want to watch some of their game. Try to arrive before 6.
Wear a red t-shirt. No collar. If we need #'s, we'll tape some on.

Monday, March 16, 2009

Update: no update yet. I spoke with the Seaside coach tonight. He's planning on us coming over and playing but his AD needs to speak with our AD first. He said he'd let us know no later than 10 am. So plan on getting a text message sometime tomorrow, or check back here.
If there's a game: no practice. No game: practice.
See you either way.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Nice day at the beach Friday, although a little breezy. We'll try to do it again.
We have practice this week, and (it looks like) a game on Tuesday. Tuesday's game is tentatively scheduled for 6 pm at Seaside High against their JV team. Their varsity plays Salinas High that night and Salinas does not currently field a JV squad. So I'm trying to get our team on the schedule for the Salinas dates with the other teams in the league. We'll see.
One other bit of news: I'm going out of town from Thursday until the 28th, so I'll miss all of the week of the 23rd. We can organize some practices, but we're shut out of the gym at least two, maybe three days that week due to some event, I can't remember what. Anyway, we'll figure something out. Just keep looking here for updates on practices and games.

GREAT JOB today!!! Nice hustle from everyone. Check out the pics. Thanks to Jill for the photog work.
We had big play at the net, very good passing, good setting and, of course, very consistent serving. I'm going to have to stick with the zero tolerance serving policy. It seems to work.
So carmel boys' volleyball at carmel high school is off to a great start. And you are a part of it!

good practice today. Here's what we decided: we'll wear red t-shirts tomorrow. We'll enter both tournaments in Watsonville in April and figure out how to pay for it. We'll try to get some b-ball uniforms for future matches. We'll get over to the MHS lower gym as fast as we can tomorrow.
That's about it.

Big welcome to new member Dane. Great practice yesterday, lots of fun. What we learned was that the key to the game is control. So let's work on control. A lot.
Practice today after school. Coach Dan will be in charge. As you practice, figure out how to get better; and at the same time, figure out how to make your teammate better.
Check out the pics:

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Big welcome to new member Jacob, a senior.
I just scheduled a game with Monterey for next week, so we'll have to learn how to pass serve in short order.  If we work hard, we have the potential to be a very good team.
Let's plan on practicing Friday and Monday leading up to the game.
See you tomorrow.

Friday, February 27, 2009

Great practice yesterday! Big thanks to coach Dan for showing up & helping out. We'll practice again on Tuesday at 3. Make sure Mike has your cell # in his phone; he will send out a text as a reminder for each practice.
Pacific Collegiate Prep, a public charter school in Santa Cruz is starting up a team as well. Looks like they'd like to get a game with us. Stand by for more info..

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Great day at the beach yesterday, for those of us who were there. The beach game, very different than the indoor game, can help us with a lot of skills. If you can pass the ball on the beach, I'll guarantee that you can pass in the gym.
We'll practice tomorrow at the high school, 2:15.

Monday, February 23, 2009

No practice tomorrow- the basketball team needs the gym. I'll be down at the beach with a net set up if anyone wants to come down. Bottom of ocean, just north of the parking lot. 3-5

Sunday, February 22, 2009

Just heard back from Coach Ken Shibuya of the Stanford Men's VB Team. He wants us to work the floor for their final game, April 18th against perennial powerhouse UCLA. It'll be in Maples Pavilion, so there should be lots of fans. We'll figure out the transportation later, but mark your calendars. The Cardinal are doing well this year; see the link  to their website.
